What does SCAUM do?

  • We promote professional practice in archaeology
  • We support the promotion and improvement of training and development
  • We negotiate with other organisations to promote best practice
  • We help to create and sustain the conditions in which archaeological businesses can thrive
  • We are a member of the Historic Environment Forum
  • We promote debate and the dissemination of policy and practice in archaeology
  • We provides guidance and assistance to our members.
  • We publish the Employment Practice Manual and the Health and Safety in Field Archaeology Manual, both updated in 2006, and both only available through the “members only” section of our website.

Our Aims

  • To provide advice and support to its members
  • To provide a forum in which the range of opinion on current questions of concern to archaeological managers can be established.
  • To encourage the adoption amongst its members of the best professional practices in employment, fieldwork and publication; and

To promote the preservation of the archaeological resource, whether by conservation or record, in the interests of the community now and in the future.
